Particle board

Particle board is particleboard. It is made by cleaning and debarking raw wood through large processing equipment, then planing it into small wood chips, followed by drying, horizontal and vertical arrangement, and high-temperature high-pressure pressing. Many carpenters will tell you: "Look at this cut surface, this board is full of wood fragments, it's not good at all."

But if you look at it, all major furniture brands and all listed companies in the board industry use particle board, including many imported furniture pieces. If you spend several thousand yuan buying a piece of Italian furniture, when you cut it open, you might find that it also uses particle board inside.

So is particle board good? Actually, particle board is very good. The production line for particle board manufacturers costs tens of millions, and high-end production lines can reach hundreds of millions. It has stable quality, excellent physical properties, strong nail-holding capability, and guaranteed environmental performance. What does environmental performance depend on? It depends on the adhesive. Large board factories now use MDI non-formaldehyde adhesive, and environmental standards reach E0 level and above.

For particle board brand recommendations, choose well-known brands such as imported Egger, Cleaf, Kronospan, RedCotton, and Deya.

Eco board

If you have eco board in your hand, you can see that the inside of the eco board is made of solid wood strips joined together, with a stabilizing layer on both sides. The appearance of eco board is very good - we can directly see the complete wood strips inside. Therefore, carpenters say eco board is good, but almost all major furniture brands do not use eco board. Why?

Because carpenters process materials on-site at homes using small cutting machines, which can only cut eco board. If you use a small cutting machine to cut particle board, the edges will chip because particle board has high hardness and high density, and small cutting machines cannot be used to cut particle board. Therefore, carpenters always say eco board is good and particle board is not good.

However, major furniture brands serve the national market and require stable quality. Eco board has a high proportion of solid wood, which makes it prone to expansion and contraction with temperature changes, easily deforming and cracking, resulting in many after-sales issues.

Here is another small tip for everyone. The name "eco board" is what the market calls it. If you look at the board names in national standards, there is no "eco board." Its official name should beblockboard or carpenter's board.

Because the production process of eco board is relatively simple, production lines can be built for hundreds of thousands of yuan, making the market quite chaotic with many small workshops. Most of them cannot be found online, and the adhesives used are urea-formaldehyde glue with serious formaldehyde exceeding standards.

OSB board

MDF board (medium-density fiberboard)

What is MDF board? MDF board is made by grinding miscellaneous wood and waste paper into powder or pulp, then pressing it under high temperature and high pressure. The hardness of MDF board can be adjusted - higher density produces high-density board, lower density produces medium-density board, and then low-density board. The use of MDF board is easy to understand. For example, when we need to carve a shape or pattern on cabinet doors, or need to create a special shape to replace solid wood, MDF board is used to reduce costs.

MDF board uses a relatively large amount of adhesive. Environmentally speaking, there is a question mark, and the risk of formaldehyde is relatively high. Therefore, try to avoid using MDF board in home decoration.

Multi-layer board

Finally, let's talk about multi-layer board. Multi-layer board is made by horizontally and vertically joining thin layers in an LVL structure. Multi-layer board was first used in bathroom cabinets and other environments prone to moisture because multi-layer board has very good waterproof performance. However, its usage in furniture is very limited because multi-layer board is prone to deformation and bending if used over large areas.
